Namibia

Home to Rössing, Husab and Langer Heinrich. One of the world’s most important uranium jurisdictions. Ideal for domestic fuel-cycle development and nearby SMR deployment so value stays on African soil.

Niger

Historic major producer (Arlit, Akouta). Opportunity to transform the export-only model into local power generation and eventual processing under national control.

South Africa

Only current nuclear operator on the continent plus significant uranium endowment and the strongest existing industrial and research base for fuel-cycle activities.

Others with Potential

Tanzania (Mkuju River), Botswana (Letlhakane area), Zambia, Malawi, Central African Republic and exploration targets across the Sahel and southern Africa. Systematic mapping continues under the continental programme.

Fuel Cycle Vision

  1. Mining & milling — Expand under African ownership and best environmental practice.
  2. Conversion & enrichment — Long-term aspiration for regional capability under strict IAEA safeguards; interim reliance on diversified international suppliers.
  3. Fuel fabrication — Priority target for continental plants so Africa no longer exports ore and imports finished fuel.
  4. Reactor operation — SMRs and large units as detailed in the national engineering plans.
  5. Spent fuel & waste — Interim storage at plant sites; research into recycling; eventual deep geological options coordinated continentally.

All stages remain peaceful-use only. The Treaty of Pelindaba and IAEA frameworks are the non-negotiable foundation.
